Education Summary

Elevating the levels of educational attainment and preparedness ensures that citizens gain the knowledge and life skills required by the global economy. Highlights of the region's progress include:

  • More than 89 percent of children entering kindergarten in the Hampton Roads region are prepared in literacy fundamentals, a higher percentage than any other region of Virginia.
  • In 2009-2010, 80.7 percent of the students who were tested in the Hampton Roads region passed the Third Grade Reading Standards of Learning assessment.
  • Over 88 percent of adults in the Hampton Roads region have at least a high school degree, but the on-time high school graduation rate is the second lowest in Virginia.
  • In 2010, nearly 75 percent of high school seniors in the Hampton Roads region planned to attend a two-year or four-year college.
